are back. today representative nancy pelosi said she'll serve as house democratic leader for two more years. she actually hummed the song "hallelujah" as the women of the incoming 113th congress joined her for the news conference. this is a record-breaking group, my friends. there was barely room on the platform for all of them to show up and be a part of it. pelosi will be joined by 80 other women in the u.s. house of representatives. 20 women will serve in the united states senate. it's a diverse group of women who probably won't agree on every issue. their success socked the republicans, no doubt about it. senate democrats were the underdogs in the election cycle, especially in the great state of north dakota, the prairie. republicans counted on congressman rick burg to defeat heidi heitkamp. didn't happen. they were wrong. and one of the nation's most accurate forecasters got it wrong as well. >> we missed the north dakota senate race. >> yes, you did. you said that republican rick burg would win. he lost. >> he lost. >> foerp north dakota attorney general heidi heitkamp narrowly defeat
striking this deal? what about nancy pelosi, harry reid, mitch mcconnell? in 2011 it was basically boehner and obama, this time there might be a few more lawmakers who want in on this deal. jenna: the president's going to be sitting down with leaders later on this week. let's talk about style versus substance, something we talked about a lot with the election. i was reading comments from the ceo of at&t today, also the senior economist from bank of america who say, listen, if they'd reach an agreement, great. but if between now and then and the disagreements look really big and bad, that's going to damage this economy because it just shatters any consumer confidence going into the holiday season. >> yes. jenna: so, ultimately, they could find a solution, but damage will already be done. what dueck about that, bob? what do you think about the style to all this as well? >> that's why -- and i agree with that, they're going to need a deal by mid december because it's going to shatter consumer confidence, and the stock market's going to play a big role here. we saw that in the bailout in 2008
. for the wealthy. do you subscribe to that? >> no. if the president had a mandate, nancy pelosi would be the next speaker of the happen. -- of the house. that will not happen. >> what about your outlook? how confident are you right now as these negotiations began at the end of the day there will be a deal that you and your colleagues can support? >> very confident. there is an opportunity the president has to lead the country in a way that he wanted to in 2008. there is a benefit to limited government. the president did not have it in two dozen 9. now they're in it -- in 2009. now there is a restraint influence, and there is an opportunity for both of these men, the president, who i knew from my days in the state senate, the speaker of the house, and their dispositions to come up with the remedy. >> would it be better if there were just a two of them? >> they have temperaments that can get to yes, and that is a good thing. >> thank you for joining us. one of the players in these negotiations. thank you for your time for the republican perspective. >> live coverage as ted koppel talks about live i
